About Cancun

Cancun city is on the Yucatán Peninsula’s northeast coast, facing the Caribbean Sea.

It has a resort area (the Hotel Zone), known for its tall hotels, big resorts, white-sand beaches with turquoise waters, and coral reefs. The water is perfect for snorkeling and diving.

Cancun has a warm, tropical climate with a brief rainy season. It’s easy to get to, as there’s an international airport 12 miles south of the city.

Also, it’s close to ancient Mayan sites like Chichén Itzá and Tulum, which you can easily visit on a day tour.

Day 1 of your 4 day Cancun itinerary

Take a taco tour

On your first day in Cancun, you should taste the street tacos!

The ones in downtown Cancun are a world apart from restaurant tacos. Imagine fresh tortillas, delicious fillings, and the unmissable Tacos al Pastor.

If it’s your first time in town or you don’t know much about tacos, consider a taco tour. It’s a great way to be introduced to the best Mexican food in Cancun.

Relax and swim at Playa Delfines

After your food tour, head to Playa Delfines for a relaxed beach day.

Playa Delfines is less crowded than the bustling Hotel Zone, it’s easy to reach and has free umbrellas. Take a swim with tropical fish or just relax on the beach with a book and a drink in hand. It’s the perfect place to unwind.

It’s also easy to get there by bus, car, or taxi.

Day 2:

Dive at the Cancun Underwater Museum (MUSA)

If you’re into scuba diving or snorkeling, add the Cancun Underwater Museum (MUSA) to your itinerary for Cancun.

It’s a super cool spot with artificial reefs and statues, teeming with sea life.

You can rent gear or join a tour if you’re not confident diving or going on your own. Some of these tours (like this one) also include cenote visits, snorkeling with sea turtles, and more.

Make sure to get there 2 hours before closing so you can fully enjoy this unique Cancun attraction.

Party at Coco Bongo in the evening

In the evening, you should visit Coco Bongo in Cancun.

It’s packed with acrobats, impersonators, and DJs, so there’s a wild party scene.

The entry cost includes your drinks and the entertainment, which is a decent deal. But I recommend paying a little extra for VIP seating to avoid the crowded general area.

Day 3:

Day trip to Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a must-see in Mexico.

It’s a 1,500-year-old Mayan site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with amazing structures like the Kukulcan Pyramid. It’s a 2.5-hour drive, so it’s easy to visit on a day tour from Cancun, which includes transfers, a guide, and food.

Swim in a nearby cenote

If you join the tour to Chichen Itza, you’ll also visit one of the most beautiful cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Cenotes are natural sinkholes that are great for swimming and snorkeling. You’ll find them filled with fish, stunning stalagmites, and stalactites, plus caverns to explore.

Exploring cenotes is a top Cancun activity whether you’re with a guide or drive yourself. You can rent a car through Discover Cars in Cancun here.

Chill at Playa Forum

Back in Cancun, pack your favorite book and head to Playa Forum or Playa Tortugas – both beaches are gorgeous and located in Cancun’s Hotel Zone.

I still remember the many colors of the ocean – it was so exotic. Cancun has so many great beaches so make sure to visit a few of them.

Day 4:

Sail on a catamaran to Isla Mujeres

On your last day, I recommend setting sails on a catamaran to the beautiful island of Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres has great beaches, a lovely downtown, and ancient ruins.

Taking a catamaran tour is a good way to see it all. You can snorkel and have drinks, and some tours even offer a sunset dinner.

They’ll often pick you up from your hotel. If you want to splash out, there are fancier tours with lunch included. It’s a great day out.

Or take a whale shark tour

Your Cancun 4-day itinerary could also include a whale shark tour instead, if you’re visiting between June and mid-September. That’s when they migrate off the coast.

They get up to 12 meters long, weigh more than 20 tons, and can have a lifespan of more than 100 years.

Swimming with whale sharks is one of the best experiences of my life!

Relax

Whichever Cancun activity you choose, make sure to kick back and relax when you return. You’ll find many dinner and drink spots in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Try Taco & Tequila or La Habichuela for classic Mexican food and drinks. For a stylish drink, Doble B Bar Cancun has a 1920’s New York City feel.
