My review: Angkor Palace Resort Spa, Siem Reap (2024)

Read my review of staying at Angkor Palace Resort Spa in Siem Reap and discover why you should stay here on your next visit.

Siem Reap, Cambodia

It took me almost nine years, but I have finally found new appreciation for Siem Reap – because of the lovely Angkor Palace Resort Spa.

My first visit to Cambodia… Well, it wasn’t pretty.

During the four days I spent in the country, I got trapped in a public bathroom with a huntsman spider the size of a SMALL CHILD. And upon leaving the country, our taxi driver managed to crash the car not once, but twice while I was clinging on to a broken seat belt for dear life.

That was depressing.

Then last year… and for no particular reason… I started flirting with the idea of going back to the land of horror (probably just to drown or have my teeth fall out).

I wanted to like Cambodia. I really did. So I decided to give Siem Reap a proper chance and also give myself the best incentive to love it.

It was obvious was needed to happen.. No more cheap hostels and public bathrooms. I had to find a nice place. A place where I felt appreciated. Wanted. Pampered. So I went ahead and booked this 4-star hotel. Nothing less could do. Plus, I be like…

Siem Reap, you owe me!

During our trip to the Philippines, I found a great hotel online called Angkor Miracle Resort & Spa.

Super affordable and gorgeous. It was only $53 per night.

I love the feeling of being pampered, but at the same time I feel out-of-place in fancy hotels.. I think it’s because they’re often impersonal.

And then there’s the tipping. I don’t get it.

It’s awkward. I don’t know how much to pay the guy and it doesn’t feel genuine to hand him money like that. Luckily, Thomas is SO much better in these situations than I am.

The hotel room

So, where was I?

Ah yes, the room… The room was extravagant, I tell you.

We had fresh fruits, television, minibar, an amazing view, and the list just goes on and on. It was the perfect base for the exploration of Siem Reap and Angkor Wat the following days.

Free massages – Y-yes, please!

Upon arrival, Thomas and I were given a free massage each plus a discount to the masseuse and spa.

Oh, happy day. Happy day, indeed.

… And the food in Siem Reap

Oh, and did I mention the best part?

We called my all-time favorite Pizza Company and had pizzas delivered to our room.

If you’ve been to Thailand or Cambodia by the way and didn’t taste one of their pizzas, you’ve missed out on something important, my friend. It needs to be on your priority list. Like asap.

Things to do in Siem Reap

So, yeah.. I absolutely loved the food there.

Delicious breakfast!

And don’t even get me started on the breakfast buffet.

I don’t appreciate buffets in general, but everything is freshly made here. There was an egg-station, a pancake and waffle station, a noodle station and so on..

They even had sushi. For breakfast. Did you hear that, world? I’m not the only one eating sushi from the break of dawn.

Waiters and late night swims

Everyone who knows me, knows that I love spontaneity.. So, when Thomas woke me up at 2.30 am one night and asked if I was up for a late night swim, I was all…

YEAH, BABY!

We had the pool all to ourselves and later on a waiter came by with drinks. When we got up, he was there again with heated towels.

At this point, I really only have one thing left to say.

Siem Reap…. You have officially won me over.

Book here if you’d like the same amazing experience!

  1. Wow, you really had some bad luck on your first visit to Siem Reap, I’m glad you found the courage to return though and I’m even more glad that you had an awesome time. That hotel looks incredible, I loved pretty much everything about Cambodia when we visited last year but I remember the accommodation was particularly good; Cambodia is one of those places that if you can afford to pay a bit more you get complete luxury. You need a bit of that in Siem Reap if you’re temple hopping all day 🙂

    1. I couldn’t agree more, Amy! I was really surprised that prizes were so low, and it is definitely something I’d recommend to anyone traveling to Siem Reap and wants to spend a little extra. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time in Cambodia this time around, but I’m going back to explore more of the country for sure!

  2. Hi Miriam! I’ve noticed a dragon fruit on one of your photos. Have you tasted it? What was it like? They sell imported dragonfruits here in India, and they are a bit expensive for me, so I was wondering whether they are worth trying.

    1. Sorry but I have to muscle in… dragon fruit is awful – don’t do it! My friend tasted it on the plane to Bangkok and spat it out saying, “That tastes like sh*t smells” Haha!

    2. I really love dragonfruit – especially the kind that is pink inside.. durian is the REAL nasty smelling/tasting fruit in Asia..

I think dragonfruit is pretty mild flavored, the texture is a bit strange (sort of grainy, with little poppyseed sized seeds thrown in)..

Don’t recommend it in a shake however (the texture when ground up is a bit like dirt)

  3. Looks very different from my experience of Siem Reap! I stayed in the cutest (creaky) guest house and lost my shoes in Angkor Wat? one night… will definitely have to return to sample this hotel! Mainly for the pancake station…l

    1. I’d definitely return as well and check out more hotels. Siem Reap is such a lovely city and I haven’t even begun to cover it on my blog yet – I especially loved Pub Street.. It’s a bit like Khao San, but more cozy.

  4. Wawhoooo… Thats fantastic you went back and made right. Your hotel looks freakin amaze!!!

I haven’t been to Cambodia, but I did spend a month over Christmas in Southeast Asia and found that pretty much everywhere we went, stayed and ate was of exceptional value. The equivalent home in Australia is unheard of. One of the fanciest hotels I stayed at was The Fairmont in Singapore, they upgraded us, we were on the 20th floor overlooking the cities most famous attractions, fruit plates and cocktails were thrown in too. And for a 5 star hotel, we paid an amazing price too. It was magical.

    1. The hotels in SE Asia are some of the best I’ve stayed at. This is where you get the most for the money, expecially in Bali, Siem Reap and Thailand. Loved it there!

  5. Hi, I am really enjoying your stories! I am in Siem Reap now and visited Angkor Wat yesterday. What an amazing place.
Siem Reap is ok, very very hot though and very dusty.
I am enjoying the food. 🙂

    1. Have fun in Cambodia! Are you heading to the beach, too? I didn’t have the time when I was there, but I’d love to visit Koh Rong some time in the future!

  6. Hi Miriam. I just talked to you briefly on Twitter about Plitvice. I love your blog. I’m going to Vietnam in January and hoping to see Siem Reap at the same time. It will be my first time in Asia. Will check out your hotel info – it sounds amazing.

    1. Thanks Catherine, and welcome to my blog! Angkor Wat is definitely worth a visit if you have the time. It might be easier and more comfortable to fly from Hanoi or Saigon to Siem Reap, and you should be able to find cheap tickets on Airasia or Momondo. Have fun in Asia! It’s a gorgeous continent.

  7. I’m glad you gave Siem Reap a proper second chance. It’s your well deserved break as well. A dip into the pool at 2.30am surely something crazy and memorable to do. Love your adventure, love your blog 🙂

  8. I am from the United States, and I lived in Siem Reap from Dec 2015 through Feb 2016, just a little over two months. Wonderful time and friends made there.
